Greenstreams, created two years ago is already a wonderfully successful project. We
have developed a great partnership with those who care about our rivers and canals. We
have successfully engaged local expert groups, resident associations, businesses and individuals who comprise a dedicated
and professional team. We
have arranged numerous clean-up programmes involving a wide range of volunteers to establish the River Colne area as a community
asset. Many local residents have donated their time clearing the riverbanks of weeds and rubbish.
As well
as protecting wildlife within the River Colne, Greenstreams is also helping to provide an important educational resource for
local schools. We are currently working with Kirklees Education to develop an Angling Coaching course which will be taught
in senior schools throughout Kirklees. We have also involved Hillside Primary School in workshops about the River Colne and
its history.
There are many other ongoing projects such as the monitoring
of pollution in the river following the Grosvenor Chemical fire and the trust has recently trained 24 volunteers to monitor
the rivers invertebrates. We believe that once this area is maintained
at a high standard, the River Colne can become an integral recreational, cultural and environmental resource for the surrounding
community.
The Greenstreams website is increasingly well used and
we are keen that all those wishing to be involved with the project, locally, regionally or nationally should contact us for
details of how best to get involved.
